Jobs Detective – My Clever SEO’d Landing Page Design

October 4, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 3 comments

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

At BC we’re involved in a nice new project for Jobs Detective, a new recruitment website which looks like a great project for us (we do quite a few recruitment site builds and SEO). To get the domain indexed and working as quickly as possible i’ve put together a nice little landing page that I think is really clever (prove me wrong).

For now i’ve ignored semantic content as I didn’t want to push relevancy towards any terms.

  • I researched keywords using Googles Adwords Keyword Suggestion Tool which identified lots of brand name competitor terms in addition to some generic offerings (whats going on with this tool, the results are really light on detail – this may indicate Googles new focus on short tail terms ala Google Instant)
  • I created the basic format and wrote the copy
  • As I know regional and job specific terms are widely used i.e. ‘management jobs in manchester’ i worked in an a-z of jobs which coupled alphabetised job types with alphabetised locations. The locations were taken from lists of the UK’s largest cities, towns and villages (I couldnt find anything for X)
  • I added a contact form for email notifications
  • I created a page title pseudo sentence that included keywords identified in the keyword research
  • The result is then pinged and pushed through my automated link building tools to provide initial domain/brand links to the site

I’m sure you’ll agree that design aside, it’s a pretty effective landing page design that should help give this new domain a foothold.

Top 4 Keyword Research Mistakes in Your PPC Campaign Management

September 27, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 1 comment

This document was put together by Eleni, BC’s in-house PPC Guru!

Not Using Enough Search Terms

Based on our research, a standard B2B business’s PPC campaign contains only 50 keywords. By focusing on such a small pool of terms you’re significantly limiting your campaign scope, increasing spend and reducing conversions. You should easily be able to come up with 1000s of specific and targeted key phrases that are highly relevant to potential buyers and our campaigns typically hit 5000 phrases..

Picking only Broad Match Keywords

A great way of driving up costs is to overuse broad matched terms. It’s a well known fact that high traffic terms are expensive and typically generate low converting terms when compared to the campaign spend. These search queries are typical of people early in the buying/research cycle and usually don’t reflect users purchase intentions. With this in mind it’s better to use more targeted keyword match options such as “phrase” or [exact] match for terms close to the end of the buying cycle i.e. {keyword} reviews, {keyword} price comparison, {keyword} voucher and {exact product name).

Relying On Keyword Tools

Most PPC advertisers use the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool or Wordtracker when researching campaign keywords. Both of these tools deliver good results but the major problem with them is that they are widely used by your industry and your competitors, which means the keywords they recommend are quite competitive and expensive due to their global usage. Instead try looking for synonyms, terms surrounding your topic and niche applications for inspiration of low priced terms.

Having Static Keyword Lists

Your keywords are probably seasonal so take advantage in the consumers shift in focus by modifying and evolving your keywords over time.

Business Owners – Do You Court Your SEO Company?

September 22, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

I ask this question because I’ve just returned from a a bit of a doo organised specifically for the BC team by one of our fairly recent clients who operate a Leeds based Executive Five Star Apartment/Hotel. Not only did the meeting give the whole team an opportunity to tour the building but through informal discussions we were able to better understand the clients business objectives, target market, commercial issues and competing businesses… all without the aid of a board room inquisition.

Instead this was replaced with a couple of beers, crisps and some delicious M&S sandwiches… tasty!

It may sound or feel like a pitch for some freebies but you honestly have no idea how beneficial the last two hours have been.

Retailers Do You Need To Top of Google In Time for Christmas?

September 20, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

I say this every year but if you’re an online retailer and you want to maximise your return on investment (profits) over the Christmas period then you should think about hiring your SEO consultancy around now.

For PPC/Adwords you can probably wait until the end of October as things are quick to change in the paid advertising markets but with organic SEO companies like BC (where I work) need this time to evaluate and ramp up the link building in time for the Christmas period.

You might also think about matching your in-store sales with online offers, web exclusives, and working with your courier service to ensure that you can take orders to be delivered up until the very last minute.

Also get your graphics Christmassed up to push the festive spirit onto people.

Whats more you might want to think about the post Christmas sale. Why not have a 12 days of Christmas offer with a different product being heavily discounted on each of the days after Christmas – great for email marketing.

If you have a voucher code system start trialling these codes on the voucher code network and get accounts on sites like hotukdeals.com and start building your ‘trusted’ profile so that when the time comes, you can happily plug away at your offers.

There’s lots to work on between now and the 25th December so speak to your SEO company now before its too late.

G Site Crawler, FREE XML Sitemap Spider Software Tool

September 8, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

I’m slowly introducing the team here to my standard mix of software and seo tricks and tips, one of which is the G Site Crawler, a desktop tool that crawls and generates a free XML sitemap for your site which can be used to get better indexation in Google through the submission of the site map in Google Webmaster Tools.

Its far better than any of the online tools which limit you to the first X hundred pages.

Stolen Samsung Laptop in Halifax (Red)

August 30, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Friday morning I woke to find that my car had been broken into and amongst some other things such as my sat-nav, cagoule and ‘Glastonbury’ sunglasses the dirty Ba#@rds stole my laptop.

If anyone in Halifax (UK) gets approached to buy a red Samsung laptop like the one shown below please let me know (of if you see it in cash-converters or some place like that)

Not had a good weekend.

p.s. if its still in a black laptop bag check the pocket for a brown stripy woolly hat.

A Pragmatic Keyword Research Tool

August 23, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

You can all thank BC’s Senior SEO consultant, Monica for this.

The BC team hold weekly internal presentations where a member of the team stands up and talks at length and in great detail about a specific topic. Today’s was a talk on Keyword Research by Monica which covered a lot of information about the tools, types and formats of keywords in best-practice usage.

As part of this presentation a slide was put up that showed a keyword research tool that I hadn’t seen before and I thought that in addition to the Google Link Wheel, provides a more lateral insight into the terms Google ring fences around a core topic. This tool is the Think Pragmatic Keyword Suggestion Tool.

It basically allows you to capture the live suggestions that Google displays as a search term is entered into the standard search box.

Nice!
