I’ve just finished writing this tutorial for BD’s MD who wants to get involved in social media marketing for one of our internal projects which is a new system to teach you to learn the piano in under 20 mins – amazing stuff. Having looked through many of our clients social media campaigns I’m confident that they as well as you will benefit from this simple advice.
The goal is to attract new followers and improve your sphere of influence.
New contacts are made by having your tweets re-tweeted by other users which results in your name being broadcast to their followers. The upshot of this activity is that their followers will follow you improving your influence.
Because of this process, self-interest tweets rarely work. Instead people look for the new and exciting impartial information which is a great source of re-tweet material. In addition you can leverage egos by praising other tweeters which usually results in your tweet being re-tweeted to their followers.
Here’s how to start:
Firstly use followerwonk.com to find people with the largest spheres of influence. This delivers the initial content for your initial re-tweeting activities.
Make sure you have a full social media profile
Tip
Remember – you have 140 characters of space and will need to allow X characters for a credit when people re-tweet your posts which will add “RT @yourname“
Then
Find a trending topic via Google alerts and post a rewritten version on your blog and tweet the URL of your post via ping.fm or Tweetdeck (this can also be configured to post your tweets on your Facebook wall) If you’re tweet includes a URL use bit.ly to create a short link that is SEO friendly and that has click tracking built in as standard.
Or
Write a review on your blog about a product or service and tweet the review. People look out for these citations and will often blog about your blog which is great for SEO.
Or
Post a link and opinion to an interesting article found on a 3rd party website. This could be news, video, pictures or any content.
Or
Re-tweet something someone else has tweeted, adding in a praise comment or question. Some people have massive ego’s (see Sir Alan Sugar) and will retweet any praise comment to their followers. This is a great way to get introduced to their followers.
Or
Look at trending hash tags on twitter and find an angle that justifies your creating a new tweet using this hash tag
Or
Using Search in Tweetdeck, respond directly to a user who has tweeted about a topic you are monitoring and start a conversation. Remember, these are public so don’t forget to follow the golden rule – DO NOT POST SELF-INTEREST
Don’t forget
Ask for a re-tweet in your tweets “please RT” but please use sparingly as it can come across a bit desparate.
Then
Ask your peers, colleagues and friends to re-tweet your tweets
Hopefully you should now have a great social media presence that attracts loads of new followers and has your content re-tweeted all over the place.
njoy.
