Getting a Job in SEO 2011

March 20, 2011, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I recently spend 2 weeks hunting for a new role and through i’d document some of my experiences which i hope will help you in your quest for a new SEO position. In all fairness it took me a total of 4 days to find a new job but i spent the two weeks being thorough and applying/interviewing for everything that came my way.

Contact all of the recruiters you can find

When it comes to looking for a new SEO role don’t be shy. Get on the phone and call as many recruitment companies as you can. Get them all to send you an intro outlining their service and documenting your discussion so you know they’ve taken on board all of your comments. Think about the roles they have discussed and look at tailoring several versions of your CV to cater for each different type of jobs.

Many will tout the same roles

You will have noticed by now that many recruiters will be selling the same roles. Be careful as this can be a problem and it makes it easy to get mixed up with who is referring you to whom. Make a spreadsheet and keep a record of the agent and relevant vacancies. Let them know the state of play at each turn… you will quickly be left with a small pool of recruiters who will work hard to place you.

Know who you want to work for

Take a look through the job spec’s (if you’re lucky to get them) and do your research. Sites like Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook are great at introducing their clients, methods and style whilst a good look through company’s house will tell you more about the company financials.

Use Monster …but don’t expect a quick up-take.

In the 3rd week I was still getting calls from recruiters and at this point I already had several offers in the bag. CV’s on monster can haunt you as people think your info is fresh even months after you’ve found a new role.

Apply direct

Don’t rely on recruiters. Do a search in your field and look at the Jobs pages. Ask around on twitter and Facebook and see what other opportunities come your way.

Keep your options open

You might have a background in SEO but are you suited to other lateral roles? Keep your options open. Roles like Ecommerce Manager and Social Media Consultant are all aligned with SEO and should be easy for you to move into. Also be flexible to where you want to work.

See as many people as you can

In the first instance say no to no one. Get your face out there and see what people are like, what questions they ask, how they respond to your comments etc. It will all make you a stronger candidate.

Be prepared to do a lot of leg work

I arranged my appointments so that I had multiple around the same location in the same day. This meant that I had a lot of walking to do. Arrive early. Pop into the loo and freshen up before each interview. Expect to have 2nd and 3rd interviews which can be exhausting.

…and write a lot of documentation

Many businesses will ask you to present some information or produce a report. Expect to spend at least a day putting one together and order your time accordingly. Focus on what the problem is, and how it can be solved but be careful not to document your process as you will need to…

…be prepared for businesses that are using recruitment to solve their client problems by picking your brain

Many agencies simply want to pick your brains or validate their own processes. Whilst it’s great to show off your skills… don’t give the game away.

Be harsh on businesses that don’t live up to their end of the bargain

Many companies may look and sound great but if they don’t take your recruitment seriously then they’re not worth perusing. Job hunting is a two way street. They expect you to be punctual and responsive and you have every right to expect a call when they say they will call you etc.

More to add including…

Be flexible
Its not all about money
Think about a change of scenery
Set a deadline and stick to it
Keep your recruiters up to date

I’m Not Dead

Despite the lack of activity here over the past few weeks i can assure you that i’m very much still alive and active as an SEO ;)

I’m writing a massive post on my recruitment process and giving out tips and advice to other SEO’s who find they’re in need of a job so expect that soon.

Expecting the UK roll out of the Panda update to be underwhelming as most of the damage has already been done through the devaluing of US owned properties.

Expect more soon peeps!

Recycling Mobile Phones for Cash with Mobilephonexchange

December 22, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 2 comments

Whilst getting down the Christmas decorations I noticed that I had an old shoe box full of old mobile phones and I thought “bet theres some cash to be had in there”. I found an old n0kia 3210, samsung 320i, sony ericsson i900, o2 xda mini ii and a few others – I tend to look after my mobile phones and still had the boxes which was lucky!

Having done some searching around I found a website captainmobile.co.uk that gives price comparison between all of the top mobile recycling brands including masuma, phonebank, envirophone and more. One that stood out was mobilephonexchange.co.uk which seemed to give the best deal and whats more important would recycle mobile phones for cash, if you want more than cold hard cash you can get a better deal by getting vouchers which was ideal for my last minute pressie buying.

When researching mobilephonexchange and the rest I noticed that Google Suggest was pulling up terms like scam and review however I seem pretty happy with my choice having read all of the forum threads (many of which were gamed lol) and am happy to report that its not a scam tho’ there is some wrangling that happens based on quotation and condition of the phones which i suppose was to be expected.

All in all I got just over £100 for the job lot which pretty much paid for loads of bits and bats for nices and nephews for Christmas… good times!

So my advice is if you’re getting a new mobile phone for Christmas and you want some extra cash for your January sales shopping then you might have some cash tied up in any old mobiles you have – the vouchers are a winner!

iPod Dock Reviews 2010 – Best Speaker Systems for Under £100

October 28, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

This is an update to the unfinished post from last year where i used online reviews to identify the best ipod dock for under £100 as part of my researching a gift for my GF’s Christmas present. Today sees this post updated (she decided she didn’t want one last year but wants one this year… women!) with not only new ipod docks for 2010, but also my personal reviews from having played with them in store.

Contrary to last years post, I won’t be recommending the B&W Zeppelin (best price £499 at Amazon) as having listened to both this and the Bose SoundDock (Best Price £399 at Amazon) (, the zeppelin sounded really tinny (tested with Jump In The Pool by Friendly Fires) so the winner in whats the best ipod sound dock with no money limits, then i’d definitely go for the Bose.

As mentioned before, this guide to the best ipod docks of 2010 is an active document however i have an early favorite which for the price has rich depth of sound, good mid range and nice treble for the price:

Philips Fidelio DS8500 iPod Docking Speaker

41ONtDqLlRL. SL500 AA300 iPod Dock Reviews 2010 Best Speaker Systems for Under £100

£252.75 Best Price on Amazon

This is a good looking piece of kit, has sound comparable with the Bose for roughly 1/2 the price. Its a little more expensive than my target of £100 however i’m seriously considering it.

…updated soon.

Mark Rushworth Gimped!

October 20, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 1 comment

A few weeks back the BC team had a day out at a photo shoot. It was all fun and frolicks the end result being we wanted to avoid becoming a faceless SEO agency and add some personality into our online profiles.

If you want to see the resulting page and find out about key team members then take a look at the new BCSEO Profile Pages.

I have never looked so gimpy… and the new gravatars on the blog are WAY TOO CLOSE IN lolz.

Don’t Spam Me Bro

September 25, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Right… that’s it. Ive just noticed that I’m getting over 300 spam comments per day so I’m afraid I’ve had to install a form captcha system to try and stem the flow of this junk.

Sorry folks but there you go (the perils of having a dofollow blog i suppose)

Consider dummy well and truly thrown out!
