Do Follow Links From Amazon

I’ve posted previously about how you can use Amazon Wishlists to get do follow links from your Amazon profile. Well I’ve just discovered that if you categorise your wishlist items that these categories are shown in sequence on your profile page raising your links from a megre 5 to as many as you want (I’m sure theres a top no of categories displayed, I just havent found it yet).

Remember to bolster these links with a well rounded profile and several supporting social bookmark links to get juice flowing back into your site.

UPDATE – it only lets you add 2 categories to your profile page… still 10 links is better than 5 :)

I <3 Social Networking and Bookmarking Sites for SEO

I’m working through around 2000 social networking and bookmarking sites looking for sites that will help with my link building tactics. Yes I openly admit that im not interested in being on page 1 of Digg, Redit or Sphinn, instead my interest centers around developing a niche section on a 3rd party domin which in this instance just so happens to be social bookmarking and networking sites.

There are a few key factors that I look for when building my content:

URL – my content needs to be indexable and as such im only interested in sites where my profile can be accessed directly through a URL.

Scope – Im mainly interested in sites where I can command several pages of content including profile, feeds etc

Versatility – Ideally the content would work on several levels, linking across to other profiles, having and/or pulling content into the site, allow significant on page original text content

Name – The profile name needs to be my keyword.

I use Social bookmarking sites to cross link throughout my social networking profiles and drop a few external links in to get the juice flowing. it also helps to join in on some of the fun as profile links from comments ensure that your pages aren’t orphaned from the sites root pages.

Lots of people scoff at this approach however in my experience, it’s a great way of building lots of low quality links which over time grow collectively into a stable and high value platform for controlling authority, trust and rank for your core domains.

Its exactly the same as developing your own content network, only less spammy than those used by some of the agencies ive experienced and it works every time (to date)

Link Bait Ideas – Making Best Use of Wikipedia.

When it comes to driving qualified traffic to your website I personally find that Wikipedia is great. Aside from being #1 for almost every term on the planet until Google tweak their algo’ to bump Knols up there, Wikipedia gives you the ability to research and rapidly deploy link bait under a wide variety of niche topics.

Step 1. Do Your Research

Hit every keyword you can think of and look through the wiki content that appears in Google. Then specifically look at the resource links at the foot of a page. This will tell you what information other people are linking to.

Step 2. Don’t Reinvent the Wheel

Now go back to your client and ask "do you have any information like this lying around". I typically find that 9 times out of 10, there’s a tonne of documents that with a little tweaking can be put to use.

Step 3. Think Resource

Following standard blog link bait strategies, simply compile top 10 lists or lists in general of software, service providers etc around complimentary products and services.

Step 4. Don’t Sell

I repeat, don’t try and sell your product or service as part of this information. Users can sniff advertising a mile away so when you’re writing the content don’t be tempted to use it as a platform for selling a product or service, even if you’re reviewing/comparing a product. Be impartial!

Step 5. Time to Convert

Now you’ve got some meaty link bait written it’s time to think about conversion. Remember Step 4? This doesn’t mean that you can’t add advertising for internal products and services alongside the information, or write a hook at the foot of the content that wraps it up and directs people back into the site, or even better, use selected links within the document text to key products and services (don’t overdo it).

How have i made best use of this link bait idea?

  • Added lists of open-source applications for complimentary software solutions with accompanying adverts targeted at solving issues for each niche
  • Created product reviews for competing hardware
  • Created network diagrams and technical solution walk-throughs for technology concepts

… its as easy as that.

Just reading a post on Digital Point forums about certain websites that give you the ability to auto generate content in a legiitmate manner.

Before you start, I am well aware that without internal links to these pages the benefit will be small, however in an effort to validate every ‘grey’ technique with possible white benefits I am willing to give it a try.

MTV Flux – Is it a Good Promotion Tool?

Announced on Radio 1 today was the ‘launch’ of MTV’s new MySpace rival, MTV Flux ( you can view my Flux page at mtv.co.uk/user/trooperbill )

First impressions are not good. The graphics look 1/2 done with buttons and text graphics badly aliased, the forms are all over the shop, and look completely cobbled together.

The site doesn’t give you the ability to easily find friends, instead you’ve to search by username (how am i supposed to know someone randoms username?) and the ‘latest people’ section looks like its static, unfinished and contains the name of the development team… altogether a really bad effort that looks rushed.

I’m particulaly passionate about this because we’re working on a social networking site for a client, and we’re sweating blood and tears to get things exactly spot on.

ah well…

UPDATE!
It appears that one of the main reasons for MTV setting up this service is that, as per their T&C’s, MTV can re-distribute any content uploaded into this system. This means they can play YOUR music tracks, Your Video and pretty much anything else you upload to this system on their TV chanels for free, without paying royalties.
