Directory Submission Tips for SEO

Heres a quick tip for you, when searching for directories to submit to think about the following:

  1. If you sell sofas instead of submitting to shopping>home>lounge consider >shopping>antiques and collectables as chances are theres fewer out bound links from that page i.e. think latterally and source a related folder with fewest outbound links – Googles search suggestion tool will help you identify the appropriate latteral terms.
  2. Look at MozRank instead of PageRank as PR is all whack at the moment (how down with the kids am I lol).
  3. Take advantage of the description box and max it out as it will increase the pages relevancy to your term (this works even better if you’re submitting multiple micro/feeder sites to the same directory location).
  4. Dont spam the title box.
  5. Dont bother with Meta information, its not used often.
  6. If you can add an article to a category do the same with a good title and looooong description.
  7. Try and adapt your link title to match the folder’s name i.e. a category about Furniture has my link with the anchor “Antique Furniture Sofa and Chairs”

Enjoy!

SEO and the Ghost Car Game

I’m now into my second year at Distinctive Chesterfields/Click 4 Beds and I’ve just realised that I’m now chasing my own performance from last year… in effect I have a ghost car to race against just like in a game where last years performances are now being used as a benchmark for this year…

Link Building in Italian using Social Bookmarking Profiles

I’m in the process of thinking of ways to build links to a site that sells globally. A big part of this is building links from foreign language sites so as a first step I’ve chosen to repeat my past experiments in social bookmarking using sites that are specifically geared towards specific languages.

As always I’m interested in your feedback so if you have any sites to add IN THIS SPECIFIC LANGUAGE ONLY then please add a comment and I’ll review the site and add it in if applicable.

List of Italian Social Bookmarking Sites

Example Followed Anchor Type
blocnum.com/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
indice.it/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
kligg.org/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
pubblicanews.it/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
rankalo.net/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
sugiu.it/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
squic.com/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
digo.it/user/view/profile/login/divani dofollow url profile
articolista.it/user.php?login=divani dofollow url profile
bitacoras.com/usuario/divani pending review
ghenghe.com/user/profile/divani/ dofollow url profile
diggita.it dofollow url digg post
upnews.it/user/view/profile/divani dofollow url profile
pligg.it/user/profile/divani/ dofollow url profile

Process

Firstly, the Google toolbar with its translate function is your best guide to doing this.

  1. Visit google.it
  2. Check the radio button that says Italian Results Only
  3. Perform searches like ’social bookmarks’ or ’social bookmarking’
  4. Make a list
  5. Visit each site
  6. Register using your keyword as a username
  7. Validate
  8. Complete your profiles including a large descriptive text with keywords dropped into it
  9. Look around the site for blog posting or article submission possibilityes
  10. Add your articles swapping out the english keywords for your native language ones
  11. Keep a log of dofollows etc
  12. If you encounter any dofollow Delicious style social bookmarking services and bookmark your native language pages (dont forget to update these as you go along)

Thanks all -Enjoy. And if you know of any other good dofollow foreign language specific social bookmarking sites then please let me know.

Bruce Clay SEO Factors and Trends Report Breakdown

Just downloaded the new Bruce Clay SEO Factors and Trends Report which acts as a great reminder of SEO issues we all faced throughout 2009. All in all it’s pretty well written and contains lots of hints at things that can/have been done in SEO over the last 12 months.

Heres a few of the takeaways from this excellent document.

Online Brand Presence

…the number of times a brand is used in conjunction with a keyword on pages…

Adding your brand name as part of your link building effort achieves positive results in google so now is the time to name-drop in blog comments, forum signatures, press releases, social media and articles.

Richer Search Listings

…one line site links, rich snippets, breadcrumbs and geo-location…

They mention using ‘named’ anchors to help achieve ‘one line site links’… I assume this is a turn of phrase and will be investigating whether they actually mean the name=”" attribute or whether they mean consistency of anchor text.

The use of Microfotmats such as hCard, vCard and hReview are encouraged to give more information and pull-out your listings from the crowd.

Folder structure is being used as an alternative to ‘one line site links’ so think folder structure people!

Engagement Objects™

…and will thus reward (rank higher) sites that include appropriate Engagement Objects™.

I have no idea what these are but they sure sound interesting. When I get a moment I will report back with my findings.

Contextual Links

Our research indicates that search engines have added more weight to contextual links and less weighting to links from the navigation, side bars and footer…

Hit articles, blog posts, guest posts, social media and other sources of in-content links to boost your rankings.

So there you have it. Just a few of the excellent points raised in the Bruce Clay document. There’s some new things for me to check out (what a novelty) and I am looking forwards to spending some time evaluating these techniques.

Enjoy.

The Great Walking Boots Bribe and How I Got a Free Pair Worth £90

It’s really great when people you don’t know can see the value in what you’re doing and today was such a day. I received a nice little email about my Glastonbury post where I mentioned buying walking boots in place of wellies. It said something along the lines of…

“shame you’ve already bought some walking boots as I’d have given you a pair in exchange for a link”

As a died in the wool Yorkshire man, I couldn’t resist a freebie so I quickly emailed Adam from Fitness Footwear and opened expressed my interest.

It seems that Adam is using product bribes as a way of increasing his serps for the term ‘walking boots’ (amongst others), approaching blog owners like me and offering a sly bribe of some free equipment in exchange for some juicy links.

Needless to say, this post is the result (let’s throw in another reference for walking boots just for good measure lol) however it begs the question…

“Why don’t other product suppliers offer goods in exchange for marketing assistance?”

In my previous life, as owner of a small web studio, I’m no stranger to blagging some freebies from the occasional customer. yet in the realm of online marketing with millions of casual bloggers creating masses of content on a daily basis, such an approach could yield massive results. Sure, you have to cherry pick the brightest and best of blog owners, the articles need to be well written and come from authoritive sources, and you’re offer has to be tempting enough for a bite, but this is no different from ‘obtaining links’ for cash.

Where it does have the advantage is that its a more personal relationship and instead of a couple of pounds spent buying some dodgy links from an Indian blog network, you could get bigger and better product placement reviews from a more Google friendly sources.

Adam also mentions that It’s also worth mentioning that bloggers have been so impressed with Fitness Footwear that they’ve bought products from us, essentially making our money back on the freebies that were sent out in the first place.

So if you’re a marketer working for a product based company consider throwing some freebies at worthwhile bloggers… you never know, it could be the trust/authority/juice you need to top the rankings.

I’ll post a picture of my new walking boots when they turn up next week shoe money stylee :)

…and thanks for the bribe Adam.

Reciprocal Directory Owners and Unfair Link Exchanges

I’ve been getting back to my roots lately with some directory submission and have noticed how unfair many websites submission criteria are. Several directories require a reciprocal link in order to be listed (not that I’d condone exchanging links with a directory) whats worse is that in exchange for a link burried deep on a PR -1 page with no mozRank, no Alexa rank etc they want a link back from your home page! Some even state that your site must have a pagerank of 4 or something. C’mon directory owners, if you want subscribers then play fair and give those who do reciprocal link a decent wodge of juice for their link.

Secondly, it’s a directory owners duty to catalogue and list websites where as it’s not a site owners nature to market a directory?

While I’m chuntering on heres a great way to get the best out of directory submission.

Use the SEOChat PR search tool with the google site:www.domain.com query and order by PageRank to find the juiciest pages on a site and go for links on these. You might need to stretch the truth about your sites content to get in some sections i.e. I’ve submitted links to Antiques sections even though our Chesterfield sofas are newly made and played on the antique nature of the original design but it seems to work.

Simples!

Link Building Tip – People Who Pinch Your Images

As part of my general link building activities I’ve been cataloging sites that have stolen our photography for their own use. More often than not these are blog owners or worse magazine writers who need something quick to drop into a post to support the content. As ive developed a sizeable list ive decided to go back through and address each site requesting that we be credited for the use of our image which over a short period of time will turn into some nice linkage from authorative sources.

There are some free sites out there that offer to match your images with stolen ones on 3rd party servers however their indexes are too small to be of any real use.

Rage Against the Machine Vs Xfactors Joe McElderry for Christmas Number 1

41syRebwN6L. SL160 Rage Against the Machine Vs Xfactors Joe McElderry for Christmas Number 1 Rage Against the Machine Vs Xfactors Joe McElderry for Christmas Number 1

Well, I have to say that the Xfactor final was a foregone conclusion and I for one think that Olly Murs had a close escape from the curse that is Xfactor rubbish singles/albums, you know that Joe McElderry is going to tank after the first album… but good luck to the guy.

If like me you’re loathing to hear Joe McElderry’s single throughout Christmas then you have an alternative… and its quite a feat of viral marketing that has put this opportunity out there and that is…

Get Rage Against The Machine to Xmas number 1

This anti-xfactor campaign has run around Facebook and a host of other social media. It’s even backed by other artists including the Prodigy who all seek to give Simon Cowel a kick in the nadgers by trying to bump the Joe McElderry single off the top spot. Its not a feat for the faint hearted as with 10′000 vites on last nights final and an army of women over 50 all rushing out to buy little joe’s single its going to be a mamoth effort to get Rage Against the Machne to number 1.

So if you’re up for a bit of fun ive stuck a couple of Amazon links below where you can spent a couple of pence and buy either single. I for one am stumping up the cash and backing Rage Against the Machine!

Rock on!
