Google Now Weighting Internal Pages

November 25, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Nows the time to get your internal anchor text structure honed to a fine T as Google have switched their algo from showing home pages that have been hammered with anchor text, to internal pages from said domains that relate fully to the target term.

For example – The home page for Markrushworth.com ranked #2 for ‘seo leeds’, yet today this has been replaced with one of my internal pages weighted towards this term.

I think page sculpting will be back in fashion in a big way again, only in place of no/dofollow links, it will be all about consistent use of anchors across the site and implimenting the first link rule.

If you’re keen to try this out my advice is to think like wikipedia. Every page on wikipedia is targetted for a particular term (including multiples etc) theres very little overlap or deviation from this rule.

Google Instant Previews – The Next Big Marketing Tool?

November 12, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 3 comments

Along with Google Suggest and Google Instant, The big G has also rolled uot a niche service that displays a website screenshot when you mouse over a listing i.e.

google instant preview Google Instant Previews The Next Big Marketing Tool?

google instant preview

How long before the marketing bods (and SEO’s for that matter) realise this is great for point of sale and through the use of large banner graphics where the test is still legible in the preview. Just imagine browsing the preview panels looking for a great deal on a blue widget without even clicking into a site… could this be the next big thing in SEO?

Alexa Confirms Google October 2010 Update Schinannigans

November 12, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Ryan has forwarded to me a great post from Alexa that gives some further insight int the Google updstes that happened throughout October 2010. According to their information the issues following Octiver 17th were an indexing glitch that saw many sites internal pages dissapear from the results. These pages have slowly returned over time tho’ are no where near their pre October positions. Other internal pages have stormed up the SERPS which leads me to think that maybe deep linking and pagerank flow from home page to deep link is now key (and stopping home pages for ranking for solid terms).

What is funny is how a few weeks ago I spend an age explaining to an Agency suit that not everyone accesses the home page as their first view of the brand… he just didnt get it lolz.

Google Local Listings Integrating with Organic & Going PPC

October 28, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Ryan, one of our rockstar SEO consultants has just spent all morning writing a new BC blog post about the imminent changes in how Google displays local listings. In particular, how they’re fully integrating local listings into the organic results (no longer as a separte panel) and introducing a PPC model for the top positions. Its well worth a read and we will be following this up with details on how you can capitalise on this change in the SERPS.

&pws=0 Firefox Plugin

October 8, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 1 comment

If you’re like me and are forever apending your searches with the query string addition &pws=0 to ensure that you’re seeing googles unfiltered, unpersonalised results then you probably need this plugin.

Close Firefox, unzip it and run the EXE.

Now and forever more searches will be appended with &pws=0 automatically.

JOY!

Google Keyword Tool Abandons Long Tail

October 8, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 4 comments

Marty has confirmed that the ubiquatous Google Adwords Keyword Tool now no longer shows long and medium tail terms. This is pretty damaging for SEO’s who often rely on this tool for keyword research and as a way of gaining insight into a market. Luckily Marty has put together a list of alternative tools for us to use (paid and unpaid).

Guess its time to look for alternatives to long-standing Google tools as they seem to be systematically being removed from popular use.

Google SERPS Update 7 October 2010

October 7, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 33 comments

Anyone else noticed todays SERPS change which may be limited to the UK results (unconfirmed) it seems that deep-linking has been devalued, and anchor text too. The trend seems to be more brand focused tho im having difficulty in seeing how some brand sites are ranking for some unbranded terms when the main site doesnt seem to support the keywords.

What makes a branded site?

  • Volume of searches for the brand name?
  • Click through rates to the site?

… if so what about sites where the company name is a keyword? Surely they should rock.

Expect more insight soon as i begin to take apart these changes (unless they revert back in the next few days). Fingers crossed we’re not looking at another Florida update in time or Christmas:(

Updated Google SEO Starter Guide

September 30, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Back in the day, I reviewed the Google SEO Starter Guide outlining what was good, bad and missinformative about it.

Well, if you found that usefull, good news! It’s been updated and now has pretty illustrations and a handy glossary of terms.

Read it here.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool Updated – SKTool To Be Discontinued

Untitled 300x220 Google Adwords Keyword Tool Updated SKTool To Be Discontinued

New Google Adwords keyword tool

Behold. The new Google Adwords keyword tool. It looks a lot like the SKTool (which is being discontinued) and now includes Traffic Estimator (top left) which can be used to estimate guest what… that’s right traffic and PPC/CPA amounts.

I still prefer the old Google keywords tool as i like the Synonyms which works great for LDA

New Google Patent Reopens C Class SEO Hosting Debate

September 15, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 1 comment

Just read a post about a new Google patent that outlines Google’s efforts to determine link sources from affiliated content and decrease the weight/value of non-independent links.

This reminded me of a recent conversation I had with a hosting company who spent ages trying to convince me that my request for individual c class IP addresses for my clients domain hosting was a dead technology
that wouldn’t benefit SEO.

In the afore mentioned article they clearly state that links from sites hosted on a different class c IP would signal that this content may be independent.

If anyone knows a UK based host that can provide cheap c class hosting please do get in touch as i’ve yet to find a cost effective provider.
