Authority Vs Relevancy: The Big Hitters Of SEO

(My First Ever Guest Poster)

SEO can seem pretty complicated at times. Lord knows there are enough blog posts out there talking about all of the various nuances. But if you are blogging for profit or just trying to get more traffic to your site, you simply have to learn good SEO…

So in this particular post, I am going to attempt to simplify things slightly; and failing that, I guess I’m just adding one more post to the clutter. But I’m going for the first option.

In my opinion, every search engine algorythm essentially groups all of the various ranking factors into 2 groups: Authority and Relevancy.

Authority:

This is basically a score of how “good” your site is. This will include little details like load speed and stuff, but will also include things such as the age of your site, the number and quality of links you have and basically anything that makes a site appear to be Authoritative.

Relevancy:

Ok, this is the critical bit; so I shall use an example: CNN.com pretty darn authoritative. But if you do a search for “carrots”, you won’t find CNN in your results because it’s totally irrelavent.

So What?

The upshot of this is that you can actually consider your SEO in two parts.

So when you are relentlessly building your blog, building links to it and doing lots of promotion; if you are wondering why you still aren’t getting any organic search traffic or any decent rankings, maybe you should look at your relevancy.

Keywords:

To be relevant, you need some keywords to be relevant to. So before you get dis-heartened about a lack of organic traffic, stop and think about what sorts of keywords you would like to be ranking for.

Once you have an idea of what keywords you actually want to rank, do all the obvious things like making sure your pages are actually relevant for those phrases. Then start trying to use these same phrases in link texts.

Summary:

It goes without saying of course that if you want to rank for a set of phrases you will need to build up the authority of your site.

If on the other hand you already have a site with some authority, it is well worth considering what phrases you might be able to optimize your pages for in order to exploit the authority you already have.

It is sometimes surprising just how easily a previously un-ranked page can rise up the rankings after a bit of on page optimization; especially if the rest of your site is already well established.
