Google Instant Shows The Sinister Side of Search

September 9, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

In the 40 minute daydream that passes for my journey into work this morning I spent most of the time thinking around the Google Instant service and what I have uncovered is pretty sinister stuff.

If what I predict is true and Google Instant begins to narrow keyword usage to that of those in the Google Suggest box, this means ever more traffic will be driven to these target terms. This in turn means that the organic SEO and PPC industry will become polarised around these phrases driving up competitiveness and PPC costs!

Its still early days for Google Instant (which you can view at google.com – make sure it doesnt redirect you to .co.uk) and buzz in the office has centred around the incremental results that show up as you type i.e. w, wo, wom, woma, woman, womans, womans s, womans sh etc which is certainly a new slant on keyword research that I hadnt previously investigated.

Fear not I will keep you posted.

Google Instant and what it means for SEO

September 9, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

As I predicted yesterday, Google have released Google Instant, their live search as you type interface.

But what does this mean for SEO?

For a starters Google Instant isn’t active on the main Google home pages google.co.uk/.com etc  which means that for First Search customers, thing are pretty much as normal.

Where things start to get interesting is for any subsequent searches as this is where Google Instant is active.

Try a number of searches for products – you will see that Google Suggest kicks in as usual and the organic listings update as you type… pretty cool so far. However as this takes away the need to browse the listings I predict that Google Suggest will play an ever more important role in search. This means that correct punctuation i.e “women’s shoes” – not “womens shoes” and the use of defining singular or plural term as an extension to your primary keyword.

Ultimately the Google Analytics data will be what drive SEO… lets just see if I’m right over the Christmas period!

G Site Crawler, FREE XML Sitemap Spider Software Tool

September 8, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

I’m slowly introducing the team here to my standard mix of software and seo tricks and tips, one of which is the G Site Crawler, a desktop tool that crawls and generates a free XML sitemap for your site which can be used to get better indexation in Google through the submission of the site map in Google Webmaster Tools.

Its far better than any of the online tools which limit you to the first X hundred pages.

Check it out!

Google Live Search As You Type

September 8, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Looks like Google is planning to roll out a live AJAX/JSON style search with the results tailoring them to your search terms as you key in the words.

This is pretty revolutionary and (although i personally hate it in this contect) could help hone your SEO.

In short, to make best use of this technology add the keyword results ONLY into your keyword pool – this probably means that plurals are out as singular terms are often pulled into the Google suggest box as words are typed.

Check the following videos for details and let me know what you think!

Using Dropped Domains for SEO

September 6, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

I know a guy who repeatedly calls me with ‘the latest and greatest’ in dropped domains and its something that i think coupld really benefit any SEO in their day to day link development work.

Basically the process would follow:

  • Source dropped domains from sites like unwanted-domain-names.co.uk (anyone know any more)
  • Check back link numbers for accuracy
  • Check anchor text for backlinks using opensiteexplorer.org to ensure relevancy
  • Check deep links for backlinks and try and match with pages on target website
  • Buy domain
  • Register with Google Webmaster Tools
  • Create .htaccess file with 301 redirects for all old content url’s to new url’s

This could be a great way of building some nice authorative backlinks pretty cheapley and if on-topic would bring new custom.

Id be tempted not to buy a domain if the anchor texts were off topic as this could lead to a world of hurt.

Anyone got any experiences of this they’d care to share?

Move WordPress to Blogspot Tool

September 3, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 2 comments

Some of my {foo}.wordpress.com sites have been deleted for apparently being ‘advertising’ – an issue im not happy about as i purposefully made them not commercial and topical with links out to independent non-affiliated sites and resources and despite my appeals to this effect I’ve been told they wont be reactivated.

So from today onwards I’m moving everything to Blogspot.com which is a bit more friendly (and as a Google product has inherited Domain Authority). This task has been made much easier through the use of this online tool which takes an exported site from wordpress.com and converts it for use on blogspot.

Happy Days!

Use Canonical URL to Target Different Countries in GWT

September 2, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Is it just me or does Google Webmaster Tools give you the ability to target www. domains at one country and non www at a different country whilst keeping the target URL the same?

Try it for yourself, log into Google Webmaster Tools and set up (and validate) two entries www.domain.com and domain.com go to each sites settings and there you can see you can set the country of focus.

Best use of canonical domains ever!
