Top 4 Keyword Research Mistakes in Your PPC Campaign Management

September 27, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 1 comment

This document was put together by Eleni, BC’s in-house PPC Guru!

Not Using Enough Search Terms

Based on our research, a standard B2B business’s PPC campaign contains only 50 keywords. By focusing on such a small pool of terms you’re significantly limiting your campaign scope, increasing spend and reducing conversions. You should easily be able to come up with 1000s of specific and targeted key phrases that are highly relevant to potential buyers and our campaigns typically hit 5000 phrases..

Picking only Broad Match Keywords

A great way of driving up costs is to overuse broad matched terms. It’s a well known fact that high traffic terms are expensive and typically generate low converting terms when compared to the campaign spend. These search queries are typical of people early in the buying/research cycle and usually don’t reflect users purchase intentions. With this in mind it’s better to use more targeted keyword match options such as “phrase” or [exact] match for terms close to the end of the buying cycle i.e. {keyword} reviews, {keyword} price comparison, {keyword} voucher and {exact product name).

Relying On Keyword Tools

Most PPC advertisers use the free Google Adwords Keyword Tool or Wordtracker when researching campaign keywords. Both of these tools deliver good results but the major problem with them is that they are widely used by your industry and your competitors, which means the keywords they recommend are quite competitive and expensive due to their global usage. Instead try looking for synonyms, terms surrounding your topic and niche applications for inspiration of low priced terms.

Having Static Keyword Lists

Your keywords are probably seasonal so take advantage in the consumers shift in focus by modifying and evolving your keywords over time.

DIY Dofollow Youtube Link

September 27, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 2 comments

Bit of a strange one this. But you can get an easy dofollow link from Youtube like this using the following code:

http://www.youtube.com/redirect?q=http://www.markrushworth.com&event=as_seen_on_redirect&usg=-WBdJDUIh3qzq2EVUK7Z7SiyNDo=

Just change my website address for yours.

…now if i could now  get an internal Youtube link to reference this that would be amazing…anyone any thoughts on this?

Don’t Spam Me Bro

September 25, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

Right… that’s it. Ive just noticed that I’m getting over 300 spam comments per day so I’m afraid I’ve had to install a form captcha system to try and stem the flow of this junk.

Sorry folks but there you go (the perils of having a dofollow blog i suppose)

Consider dummy well and truly thrown out!

Bookmarking Demon Social Media Sites List (Clean as of today)

September 24, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 17 comments

Hi y’all. In the past i’ve posted big ass lists of social media sites like pligg etc for use in your social media strategy. I know that in the past these have been unclean with a large portion of the data being out of date.

However today you can download a CSV of cleaned social media sites that have been validated using the excellent Bookmarking Demon tool.

Theres around 2400 sites in this list so please exploit it however you please and I’d appreciate some backlink love on this as it was a complete chore to clean.

Great Link Development Post

September 24, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

It is always refreshing to find someone who can explain a topic better than I and today I have come across one such post.

Ross Hudgens has published a fantastic article on how to qualify your link prospects to make sure you’re sourcoing the right types of links for authority, trust and relevancy. Its in the form of a simple step by step guide that should see you right.

I plan on revising his process into a descision logic style flowchart as its so suited to this. Expect that here soon.

Google Adwords Keyword Tool Updated – SKTool To Be Discontinued

Untitled 300x220 Google Adwords Keyword Tool Updated SKTool To Be Discontinued

New Google Adwords keyword tool

Behold. The new Google Adwords keyword tool. It looks a lot like the SKTool (which is being discontinued) and now includes Traffic Estimator (top left) which can be used to estimate guest what… that’s right traffic and PPC/CPA amounts.

I still prefer the old Google keywords tool as i like the Synonyms which works great for LDA

Do You Use CSS Galleries in your SEO Strategy?

September 23, 2010, by Mark Rushworth 1 comment

For new website launches theres no better way of building initial interest than submitting your website to the plethora of online CSS galleries.

I’ve just discovered a freebie tool that promises to make this process even more pain free… meecss.com

Basically, you enter your website details and the wizard steps through each of the (more than 100) GSS gallery websites in turn and helps you populate the submission forms.

Its just a quick tool but it looks like a winner to me :)

A Plea to WordPress Theme Authors

September 23, 2010, by Mark Rushworth No comments yet

SO you’ve created a great wordpress theme, got your demo site up and running and packaged the files for download… looks great so far.

But you know what really annoys wordpress theme users? When the re-uploaded packaged file is totally unpopulated and doesnt look anything like the dmeo theme you’re showcasing on your site.

Sure you’ve created a tutorial and possibly a custom admin panel… but that still means that we’re not getting what was originally shown – its like misselling. Think of buying a car only to find when its delivered that theres no seats, its uncoloured and theres no digits on any of the buttons… the same could be said of themes that when first uploaded and activated, dont represent the demo theme shown.

So back to my plea… can you please pre-install all of the content shown on your demo sites when themes are first installed.
